Indian Influence in 1960’s Fabric Design

In the late 1960s and early 70s there was a great fascination for Eastern cultures. The Beatles especially were very interested in Indian music and were influential in spreading the word widely. Music, art and fabric designed for clothing and interiors all showed this trend.

It was a fashionable, especially with the hippy movement to wear kaftans, paisley designs and batik printed clothing from India.  The style was reflect in much of the fashion of the time.

Indian fabrics were also widely used in interiors, for bed spreads and curtains.

British designers of the era such as Collier Campbell also showed their interest in eastern culture in fabric designs such as ‘Zebak’ and ‘kasbah’.

  1. I actually wear Pakistani & Indian clothing and I’m an English Brit, born as a Caucasian Christian but reverted to Islam and I wear Indian Pakistani clothing Kurta, Kaftan, Salwar Kameez due to comfort & religion, but discovered Bell bottoms and Umbrella bell bottoms are called Gharara/ Sharara palazzo trousers & also that these clothes were very fashionable in the 60s and 70s and have come back into fashion again along with Victorian Gothic style clothing too, but most of my Indian Pakistani clothing has bell or umbrella bell bottoms and are becoming fashionable again amongst many other items, & these clothes are getting fashionable again for many cultures and many different people regardless of religion, culture etc. it’s really quite nice, apparently these items were popular in the 60s and 70s & still have made a huge comeback especially for those into hippie style clothing, I love it, to see these many many new, old & very old fashions all making a comeback all at once, fabulous 😻🤩
